PURPOSE OF PROJECT COORDINATION PROGRAM

The major dates for the proposed downtown projects need to be known because of their direct impact on business, the public, and tourism.  Being unaware of potential street closures, redirection of traffic, etc. can deter or reduce sales, which is not good for downtown businesses or the public.  By informing the downtown business community and the public of any construction project dates that can impact them, will prevent any misunderstandings, disorder, or loss of profit.

EL PASO FEDERAL COURT HOUSE

The new Federal Court House planned for downtown has its demolition phase completed. The location is between Magoffin and Myrtle streets, north and west, and immediately east of Campbell. Construction has begun. The project is scheduled for completion in the near future. The project is a GSA Design Excellence project, designed by Antonie Predock and will become an architectural treasure for El Paso.

This is a $74.7 Million Project

Plaza Mills Project

The newest downtown project Mills Plaza Properties, with the architectural firm Martinez & Johnson Architecture of Washington DC and the Waters Design Group of El Paso, have developed plans to create a business, restaurant and retail district at the heart of El Paso’s downtown focused around the Mills, Centre and Plaza Hotel buildings. Martinez & Johnson Architecture specializes in the renovation of historic buildings including the Boston Opera House and El Paso’s own Plaza Theater. The Anson Mills Building will feature a full restoration using careful methods to maintain the foundation of the architectural design intended by Trost. Renovation of the building will include state-of-the-art technology and will serve as a premium location for businesses with an elegant promenade of restaurants and retail shops on the ground floor. Mills Plaza Parking, an affiliate of Mills Plaza Properties, recently purchased the metro ticket kiosk located north of the Mills Building, and is working with the Borderplex Community Trust to purchase the Jack in the Box parking lot to create the new St. Regis Parking Garage. The garage will be designed after the façade of the original hotel and create a 700 to 1000 spot secure, well-lit parking lot connecting directly to the Mills Building. The District will also include the Centre and Plaza Hotel buildings, extending the business lease space as well as pedestrian-friendly restaurant and retail opportunities. The Centre Building is already at capacity for office space tenants.

Toltec Park & Bus Stop

A great example of downtown collabortion is the Toltec Park & Bus Stop located by the Fountain where Magoffin Street and San Antonio Street Divide. With paint and art work provided by Mass Transit Authority Sun Metro the El Pao Downtown Management District sent their crews to scrape, primer and paint the bus shelter and street furniture located at the bus stop. Before the project rust had turned the railing and steel fixtures almost totalily orange, weeds were overgrown and the vegetation was looking poor. As a result the crews have painting, weeded, cleaned and at the cost of the DMD, installed banners with Sun Metro's new logo. Now the park/bus stop is looking good, sitting between the Federal Court House. Next will be the installation of a plaque designating the Pine Tree in the little triangle park the tallest of its kind, in the State? The Renaissance Committee of the El Paso Community Foundation will be providing the plaque which is donated to the City and DMD crews will help transport and place. All a great partnership saving the taxpayers a good deal of money.
